Staff Reporter: The workers working in the readymade garment factories of the country will get their salaries for the month of April within 30 of this month.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Mr. Fazle Kabir confirmed this from a press conference held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganobhaban today.
The government has already announced a Tk 5,000 crore allocation from the budget to supplement the wages for the RMG workers.
The Governor Mr. Fazle Kabir said, “Three months’ (April, May, June) arrears salaries of the workers will be paid from this allocated fund”.
Bangladesh Bank came up with a circular on 2nd April (Thursday) after PM had announced the package according to what the running factories which are exporting 80% of their total production will be eligible for interest free loan from this package which would be using to pay the wages of their workers for the month of April, May and June. The bank can add 2% on this loan as service charge.
He also said, “We have reduced the Cash Deposit Rate (CDR) of Scheduled Banks to 5% from 5.5 % from April 1 based on weekly average. There will be an additional stock of Tk. 6 Thousand 5 Hundred Crore Taka in the scheduled banks of the country with which they will tackle the liquidity crisis”.
“The banks have been functional in the general holidays in the limited number and we have also taken measures not to add any additional charge with credit cards until May. Besides, to deal with the outbreak of coronavirus, some relaxations have been made by us in the transactions of foreign remittance”, he added.
